Elanco’s Grand Challenge Program: Alternatives to Animal Antibiotics

In June 2015, Elanco announced their Eight-point Antibiotic Stewardship Plan to fight antibiotic resistance, a growing concern for all sectors of healthcare. This aggressive plan focuses on responsible use, reduction of shared-class antibiotics, and finding alternatives.  With the population anticipated to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, the demand for animal protein is anticipated to increase 60% globally, putting continued strain on the earth. Emerging diseases threaten livestock globally, threatening their well-being.

As part of their strategy to advance the eight-point plan, Elanco is partnering with InnoCentive to launch a Grand Challenge Program on alternatives to animal antibiotics. This Grand Challenge Program will consist of a series of Challenges posted on InnoCentive.com throughout the year. These Challenges will ask Solvers to propose novel solutions that prevent, treat, or control specific diseases that can affect cattle, poultry, or swine. Proposed solutions can be either an alternative to antibiotics or an animal-only antibiotic (not shared-class).

Elanco has recently launched the first two Challenges in the series which you can view on the Elanco Pavilion. Prevention and Control of Mastitis in Cattle wants Solvers to find a novel way to prevent or treat mastitis in dairy cows that will also decrease the amount of antibiotics used in the dairy industry.  Prevention and Control of Streptoccus suis Infections in Swine is seeking solutions that prevent or treat the pathogenic bacterium and zoonotic agent affecting swine and humans.

Please regularly visit the Elanco Pavilion as more Challenges will be posted throughout the coming months.
