Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and their Design Research Education of Additive Manufacturing Systems (The DREAMS lab) have been announced as the winners of the America Makes Smart Structure Challenge for their Smart Wing Project – detailed mechatronic devices for use in winds for remotely-piloted aircraft (RPA).
The Challenge sought “smart structures” that were produced using additive manufacturing (AM) and attracted over 150 Solvers. The winning team consisted of Solvers: Joseph Kubalak; Logan Sturm; Rich Dumene; Callie Zawaski; Donald Aduba, Jr., Ph.D.; and Christopher Williams, Ph.D. Virginia Tech now walk away with a Silver-Level Membership to America Makes worth $15,000. You can read more about the winning team and their solution in the America Makes press release.
America Makes has recently launched their second Challenge in the Innovation Sprint series – The AM Case Study Challenge. For this Challenge, they are seeking detailed case studies focused on examining the use of additive manufacturing as a business case. Submissions should combine in-depth primary research based on company interviews with secondary research in the form of financial data, organizational charts, business overview, machine costs and features, etc. Case studies should move beyond a “marketing case”.
As an award, America Makes is again offering Silver-Level Memberships for one year. Members will have access to the AM and 3D printing industry’s thought leaders and innovators. This membership includes significant benefits, including access to valuable intellectual property, technical presentations, project calls, and more. To receive the membership, Solvers will not transfer Intellectual Property rights, but will instead grant a non-exclusive license to America Makes to utilize their case study. Winners will be published in collaboration with America Makes.
The deadline to submit your case study is February 3, 2017.
