The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century, Antarctica has lost about 119 billion tons of ice from 1993 and 2016, and Global sea levels have rose about 8 inches in the last century. These are just a few of the effects of climate change highlighted by NASA. In addition to rising temperatures and sea levels, researchers have also noted increases in extreme weather events, which include heat waves, drought, heavy rain, flooding, hurricanes and other severe storms.

There is enough food to feed the world, research shows, yet close to a billion people go hungry every day. Despite this, countless resources are wasted on a daily basis. The United States alone wastes about 150,000 tons of food each day, and even more resources are misused through inefficient production methods by companies and undeveloped countries.

The same report also cites that, as of 2016, 91 percent of people living in urban areas worldwide were not breathing air that meets the World Health Organization’s standards, and more than half of the urban population is exposed to air pollution that is more than twice the recommended standards for safety. This has been a contributing factors to an estimated 4.2 million deaths worldwide.
